MITnet Services:

Request a Wireless Installation

Information Systems is prepared to provide wireless coverage in your on-campus office, meeting room, laboratory, or departmental space. This work entails purchasing the equipment, planning where to mount the access point(s), running wires from the closet to the wall, installing and configuring the equipment, and turning on the service. The cost of installing an access point is $1200.

These access points are considered an extension of the MIT infrastructure, and are owned, maintained, and supported by Information Systems. The speed of the current service is 10Mbs, and is limited by the speed of the building network.

To request wireless coverage in your area, please fill out the Wireless Request Form.

If you prefer to install wireless coverage in your area yourself, instructions are available at: Kerem's document. Note that a privately installed wireless network must not interfere with MITnet. See Guidelines for private wireless access points on MITnet .

Information systems does not currently provide nor support wireless coverage in residence halls. If you wish to purchase and install your own access point, please follow the guidelines at: http://web.mit.edu/is/help/wireless/guidelines.html. For general residence hall networking questions, please go to http://rcc.mit.edu/ and submit your request.

If you need more help regarding wireless installations, please contact the Computing Help Desk or call x3-1101.

To learn more about the terminology or hardware used in MITnet installations, you can look at the Introduction to MITnet Installation Concepts or the MITnet Glossary.
