"Harmony I" is the name of the autonomous wind-solar-energy-powered multi-hull sailboat that was co-designed by Qian Peng and me. Inspired by phenomenal success of the "PlanentSolar", the first ship ever around world with all solar energy, we decided to design a new conceptional unmanned ship that only powered by wind and solar energy, which theoretically means that it can travel forever without worrying about the energy problem and supply for human on board.

The idea we have about the energy contribution is that the main motive power comes from wind and wave, and the solar electric energy will keep all the machines and appliances work properly. And also because of no human on board, we will save a lot of rooms and resources for human supply, which may give us a lot of freedom and convenience in ship structural design.

So at first we designed a 6m Lpp sailing boat, and now successfully built a 2.047m Lpp scale model.

There were many difficulties in our exploration, and still most of them today remain unsolved because of our lack of experience and knowledge, such as energy contribution, unmanned auto-piloting, the hydrodynamic performance of multihull ship, the design and corresponding control strategy of the sail and so on. But I hope, with the development of the marine technology and our continuous effort, someday in the near future our dream will finally come true.

Idea Originated From:

On 31st March 2010, MS Tûranor PlanetSolar, the largest solar-powered boat in the world, was launched, and on 27th September 2010, it started on a journey around the world in Monaco. If succeeding, it would become the first ever solar electric vehicle to circumnavigate the globe (And on 4th May 2012, it successfully returned to Monaco). When Qian Peng and I heard this news, it just shocked us, since we believed this would be a huge breakthrough for our human beings in the ocean history. And an idea came to us, "How about a marine vehicle without human on it traveling around the world with all green energy". Later, this idea just came stronger and stronger and became our dream. And sometimes we wonder whether it is possible that an unmanned marine vehicle using green power like wind, sunlight, wave and other natural energies could travel forever. This fascinating idea encouraged us to design and build this model. Of course, our current model seems simple and far away from the practical use, but with our continuous effort, I believe someday in the near future our dream will finally come true.

2m scale model description:

Length: 2m

Width: 1m

Side Length:1.83m

Side Width:0.2m

Height: 2.16m

Draft: 0.33m

Weight: 114kg

Sail area :1.24 m2

Surface area of solar modules: 1.84 m2

PV panel efficiency: untested

Also, we together designed the inner constrol system. Here is the equpiments lists and its control scheme.

In the design of the 2m scale model, we had to change several parameters in order to meet with the model constructive need, because our model would not only be used to explore its hydrodynamic performance, but also used as a self-propelled ship model.
