Anne was granted administration of his estate on 14 Apr 1826 and swore that it amounted to less than £30 (index reference for death duty: St. Davids 2 415). In 1841, Anne was a farmer at Sychpant, with her children Rebecca, James, William, and Thomas. Posthumously at his son Thomas's marriage in 1842, a laborer. Posthumously at his son James's marriage in 1847 and his daughter Rebecca's marriage in 1848, a farmer. In 1851, Anne was a farmer at Sychpant, with her daughter Rebecca, Rebecca's husband, her son William, and a servant (Anne DAVIES, b. ca. 1834 at Llangolman). (Ffynnon Fair farm is adjacent to St. Mary's Well, a local landmark whose water is said to be a cure for arthritis.) In 1861, a farmer of 40 acres, employing one boy, living at Sychpant with his brother William, sister Rebecca, niece Ann WILLIAMS (daughter of his sister Keturah), son Thomas, and nephew William MORGANS (son of his brother Thomas); Phebe was living at Ffynnon Fair with her son Morgan and daughters Ann and Kettura. Sychpant was one of a group of "valuable freehold estates" offered for sale in 1867, but this may not have affected James and his family, as they were probably tenants. In World War I, enlisted as a private in the 10th (Service) Battalion of the Devonshire Regiment, which was formed at Exeter, Devon, in Sep 1914 as part of the Third New Army. The battalion was attached to the 79th Brigade of the 26th Division, which trained in the Salisbury Plain area before embarking for France in Sep 1915. Ben arrived in France on 22 Sep 1915, but in November the 26th Division moved to Salonika. By the end of the war, Ben was an acting corporal and the 26th Division had become part of the Army of the Occupation of Bulgaria. Beginning in Feb 1919, Italian troops gradually replaced British ones in Bulgaria. Ben was demobilized on 21 Mar 1919. For his army service he received the British War Medal 1914-1920, the Victory Medal 1914-1919, and the 1914/15 Star. He subsequently became a music teacher and primary school headmaster.
