Nitro-Glycerine Plot and Murder Among the Chinamen at Horse Plains.

On or about the 29th of January, at Horse Plains, Ah Yung alias Ah Kee, a bad highbinder, who is said to have killed fifteen Chinamen and two white men, at one time and another, dug a trench about the tent of the Chinese paymaster, placing in the trench several sticks of giant powder, with the intention of having a big blow out and during the excitement getting away with $1,500 in money and $400 worth of opium which the tent contained. Before he had completed his hellish work, however, a Chinaman discovered him and asked him what he was doing, and, seeing that his little game was up he fired at his fellow countryman and ran. He was pursued by another Chinaman, who called him by name, when he turned and fired at him, hitting him in the breast, causing death. He then made his escape, and a reward of $400 was offered for his capture. He was traced to Frenchtown and arrested a week or ten days ago, but the reward business at that time was not well understood, and he was allowed to depart. Andrew Como, of Frenchtown, arrested him, the second time, at Nine Mile and brought him to Missoula. He was arraigned before Justice Sloane on Monday, but the examination was postponed until Monday next on account of the absence of witnesses. In the meantime Jailer Lane complains that the prisoner's appetite is something wonderful, and there are doubts in the minds of many as to whom belongs the reward of $400, which has been turned over to Judge Stephens for the time being.—Missoulian, 2d.

Did Andrew live in New Hampshire in 1860 and fight in the U.S. Civil War? Did he live in Colorado in the 1870s? (In the 1920 census his daughter Josephine listed her father's birthplace as Colorado, although every other source agrees he was born in Canada.) In 1880, he was a carpenter living at Krout Street, Missoula. In 1883, of Frenchtown (see newpaper item in sidebar). In 1890, he was a telegraph operator, residence 170 N. Third Street, Missoula. Andrew's burial in 1892 is recorded in a faded and hard-to-read Catholic church record (ref. 19) that says Dominum Como qui in nosocomio decessit in Martio mense sepelivi. (In the month of March I buried Mr. Como, who died in the hospital.) The index of Missoula burials (ref. 15) appears to have read Dominam for Dominum in this source and interpreted it as a woman's name, Domina Como. [ref. 1,2,3,5,14,15,19,31,32b]
