Descendants of John Ward

According to Burke, "this branch of the family of Ward has long borne the same arms as the noble house of Ward, Viscounts Bangor; as Seth Ward, Bishop of Salisbury in the time of Charles II; as Chief-baron Sir Edward Ward; as the Wards of Pomfret; and as John Ward of Squirries, Kent; but nothing positive has, as yet, been ascertained regarding its foundation, prior to the year 1704 ..." (ref. 12)

John WARD, m. Elizabeth (b. ca. 1694, d. Mar 1766), d. in the British garrison of Gibraltar when his son John (b. ca. 1726) was still "an infant, under guardianship" (ref. 23). Said to have served under Admiral Sir George Rooke and Prince George of Hesse-Darmstadt in the British capture of Gibraltar, Jul 1704 (ref. 12); to have been "in the military service" (ref. 8a); and to have "borne arms with honour and died in the British service" (ref. 14); but all these assertions were made long after his death and are of unknown reliability. Perhaps the John WARD who was commissioned lieutenant in the Royal Navy, 8 Dec 1695. In 1730, a member of the masonic lodge of St. John of Jerusalem at Gibraltar. When his widow Elizabeth made her will on 7 Jul 1765, she was resident in the parish of Fremington, Devon. She bequeathed her estate to her daughters Elizabeth and Charity. The witnesses included J. Ward junior (probably her son John, or perhaps his son) and H. Ward (relationship unknown). The will was proved 23 Apr 1766 in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, London. [ref. 3,8a,12,14,21d,23,26,27,30]
