Selecting a Guest Operating System

You choose the guest operating system you want to run in the virtual machine. You can use the Configuration Editor to do so.

To choose the guest operating system for a virtual machine:

  1. Connect to the virtual machine with a console. Make sure the virtual machine is powered off.
  2. Select Settings > Configuration Editor from the console.
  3. Click Misc in the left-hand panel.
  4. Under Guest OS, select the operating system you wish to use, then click OK to apply your changes.

The guest operating systems listed are those supported for use in VMware GSX Server.

Select the operating system from this list that is closest to the operating system you are going to install in the virtual machine. Guest operating systems that are not listed may also run but may not be officially supported for use in VMware GSX Server. If you choose to install an unsupported guest operating system, choose the Other option.

Note: It is generally not possible or advisable to run the host operating system again inside the virtual machine. Doing so may cause the host system to crash and possibly cause disk corruption if two operating systems attempt to concurrently use the same disk partitions.
