Merlinarrives in Amber accompanied by Mikele . Merlin goes to talk to King Random leaving Mikele loose in Amber with nothing to do. Felicia finds Mikele, introduces herself, and the two go to lunch at Bloody Fred's.

Their lunch is interupted by the appearance of a half dozen of the nefariousblack and silver dogs (containing an awful lot of Pattern-ness) who promptly attack them. Keverian, who is also eating there, comes to their aid, as does Lucius Minax (who just happened to run across the creatures in shadow he later says). The creatures refuse to die despite repeated thwacking, so the four flee back to Amber via trump, arriving in the presence of Merlin and Benedict.

Those involved recount the story to Benedict and Merlin and then again for Random and Fiona. Introductions are made, and all learn Lucius Minax's name for the first time. Lucius supplies the additional information that the dogs had only turned invisible upon reaching Amber (implying that he could still see them when they did). He attempts to downplay his usefulness and generally fade in the background, only to be thwarted by Keverian's praise for his timely help.

The elders have no further questions, so Felicia, Mikele, Merlin, Keverian and Lucius finally get that lunch, this time in the safety of the castle. During lunch Mikele and Merlin recount a previous encounter the two had with these creatures in shadow, stating that swords and sorcery had likewise proved inadequate to kill the creatures, but Logrus seemed to work. After lunch, Mikele and Merlin go off together, Keverian takes Lucius on a tour of Amber, and Felicia returns to her rooms.

Later, Keverian, Lucius, and Felicia return to Bloody Fred's to look into the aftermath of the fight only to discover that the dogs have been removed by Benedict and Fiona. They go back to the castle to find Fiona who tells them that all the creatures are now all dead or at least inactive. The three of them rejoin Mikele and Merlin for small talk and then all head to dinner. Also present at dinner are Random, Vialle, Martin, Flora and Gerard. Dinner is uneventful and afterwards people disperse.

Mikele and Merlin meet up with Lucius and Keverian on the way to Tir-na Nog'th. All but Merlin go up. Mikele runs into a shadow of herself and the others explore the shadow of Castle Amber.
