It's the social event (and security nightmare) of the season, the wedding of Gilva Hendrake and Evan Jesby. The charming and talented Dalamar sextuplets are running security, at least, there are six Dalamars scattered about the hall. Everyone who's anyone is there, including both Cannell and Elaine Swayhill and all of the Dukes. There is a general expectation that the wedding ceremony is going to be accompanied by some announcement about the difficult question of the succession. Felicia (actually Mary) accompanies Marris Barimen, Mikele brings Martin, and Merlin brings Morgaine Chanicutt to the ceremony and reception. Security is tight, no one is to be allowed to call on any powers and the sorcerous environment is tightly controlled.
Before the ceremony starts, Prince Cannell announces that his grandfather, the Emperor passed away that morning and he is therefore intending to ascend the throne. This not being what he was expected to say, a murmur passes through the crowd. One of the Dukes asks for elaboration about an incident with Imperial Security. Cannell asks if there are going to be any problems with this. Elaine also starts demanding to know more about Security. Cannel tells her to sit down. Elaine ignores him and repeats her demand. She also begins to call up the Logrus. One of the Dalamars goes over to Elaine and tells her she is not allowed to do that. She ignores him. Dalamar then informs her that if she doesn't desist he will be forced to attack her. She says okay and continues. Dalamar fires off some sorcerous bolts at her which have no effect. Cannell denounces Dalamar for daring to attack his sister and attacks Dalamar in retaliation.
Meanwhile, a small melee breaks out on the side lines between the factions of Security loyal to Cannell and those loyal to Dalamar. The fighting is short lived and dies down shortly. Cannell decides things are not going as well as he had hoped and elects tp depart, after first apologising to the bride and groom. After a moment or two, things calm down and the ceremony proceeds without incident from there.
After the ceremony, everyone proceeds to the reception, an elegant affair, spread out over several rooms. Mikele, Martin, Merlin, Morgaine, Mandor, Dara, "Felicia," and Marris Barimen are all seated together for dinner. Following dinner there is dancing. The Dukes all disappear from the reception very early, but everyone else seems to be enjoying themselves. Some young Minobee attempts to pick a fight with Martin, but is soundly dismissed. ("I killed twenty people yesterday; I'm trying to take today off. Go away.")
Eventually, the evening ends and people go their separate ways. The question of the succession is left for a nother day.
