FAQ
The
FAQ
- How long will this design remain?
The contract for the GradRat is a five year contract. Therefore the current
design will be the Official MIT Graduate Ring until June 30th, 2008. The GSC will convene
a new design committee in summer of 2007 to update the GradRat.
- What if my X changes? X = graduation year, major, degree
If any of your customizations change you can have the ring updated free of charge.
Please check the warranties page for full details.
- Wasn't there a grad ring already?
The simple answer is YES. An Official MIT Graduate Ring has existed for well over a decade,
but this is the first time that the ring includes hidden images that represent graduate
student life; the previous iterations were almost identical to the alumni ring with few features
to differentiate it and give it a true graduate meaning. The GradRat is the next iteration of the
Official MIT Graduate ring, bringing it to a new level.
- I have an old design Graduate Ring, can I get a new one?
Unfortunately, the limited time offer by Balfour has expired. (They had made an
excpetion, for the first year of the GradRat (until December 31st 2004), that
students could trade in their old Official MIT Graduate Ring (regardless of
manufacturer) and obtain a new GradRat.) However, there is still a
Trade-in Option in which the value of the gold
salvaged from an old ring may be applied towards the cost of a new ring.
This only applies to gold MIT Graduate Rings.
- What's the symbol for my department? What does it mean?
We prepared a page that describes all the icons of the departments.
- I don't like how obvious <x> is in the ring, what do I do?
The committee worked a lot to try to represent graduate life in hidden images
within the Bezel of the ring. Not everybody may be thrilled with all the
images, but we want to point out that they are a lot less obtrusive on the real
ring than on the drawings in the brochure. Remember the rign is a lot smaller than
the pictures in the website or the brochure, therefore all the hidden images are
truly hidden unless you specifically point them out. The beaver is the only bezel
feature you see at a casual glance; to really see any of the "hidden
pictures", you need to be looking very closely, at which point they're
humorous conversational features. You can review the size of the ring and its visible
details in the sizes page; you can also print a
PDF page (8MB download) that will print the exact
sizes of the bezel.
- When will I get my ring?
Manufacturing the ring takes approximately 8 weeks. Please check the
ordering and delivery
pages for full details on the ordering and delivery schedules.
- What if I can't go to the delivery event?
You can pick up your ring at a delivery event or have it mailed to you. Either
choice is included in the price of the ring.
- Where can I order if I missed the representatives when they were at MIT?
The ring can be ordered at the GSC Office (50-220), over the phone, and online throughout
the year. The ordering page gives full details.
