Painting

I used College Pro to do my house and they did a very nice job which is holding up well, for a very good price. I stayed home the whole time, to keep an eye on them (they're very young) and did the detail painting myself. But they were very good about the high places I wouldn't dare try to reach. I know others have not had such a good experience with College Pro; I think it entirely relative to the crew you get, but I recommend them. -ML

Plumbing

East Cambridge Plumbing and Heating

I've done a heap of furnaces with East Cambridge Plumbing and Heating. They're a family operation and very nice to work with and they are very good about ongoing maintenance troubles. They stand by their work. Only problem is that they prefer not to travel too far. So it depends on where you live whether they'll be interested. But their rates are good; do consider them.

John once came on a Saturday morning in the rain. I'd called him at 3am, and he was there by a little before 7am. How's that for a plumber w/fortitude?

Home inspectors

I used Tiger home inspection in 1994 when I bought my townhouse. They sure were thorough, professional, polite, inexpensive, and on time!!! They went up on the roof, turned on the washer, dryer, dishwasher, and all that to look for leaks, etc, inspected every closet door for proper closure, etc. They charged me less than the independents whom I had also contacted would have. I was very happy. -davidcj

I used Chris Monahon for two home inspections... He was quite professional and direct in his communications. I was very happy to work with him. His office is in Newton, phone number 617 923-2300. I have also recommended him to others who were satisified.
Before buying my house, I took a Cambridge Adult Ed class and the instructor strongly urged us to make sure that the home inspector we used was a member of ASHI (American Society of Home Inspectors) -- although no guarantee of skills, the Society does have standards for gaining membership and has a required agreement to a code of ethics.
If you need a lawyer, I had a great experience with Koffman and Dreyer of Watertown. -TAT

Ray Jackson (781-391-3114) is exceptionally courteous, honest, thorough, and schedule-accommodating. He inspected our pre-renovation condo in Cambridge (read: old systems, needed a lot of work) back in 1998. We've since referred him a few times. He was able to offer us lots of advice, and a general sense of what we were getting ourselves into. After renovation, we found that his suggestions and commentary were right on the money. -jjjenkin

We were very satisfied with Allan Morrison Home Inspection (family business), 781/665-3688. They were highly recommended by several different friends who were satisfied with their work, and we used them for two houses (one of which were are happily living in). They are thorough, critical, and honest, willing to share information and instruct about the care and maintenance of various systems in a house (heating, water, etc.) as well as help evaluate what they find. They are happy to have you trail along and ask lots of questions. And they are members of ASHI. I'd use they again (though I hope I never move again!). -nmurphy

We used Donald Cummings of National Home Inspection Service of New England, Inc. about 5 years ago. He was wonderful, and we're still very happy in our house. His phone number is (617) 923-2300, and his work address is 31 Stearns Street, Newton, MA 02159. We also used Gary Kellner of Harvard Environmental Services in Westwood, MA for a "Lead Paint Determination Report." He was also very knowledgeable and helpful. His phone number is (800) 640 -0404. -grahama

I also have used Don Cummings twice in the past three years, once for a house I didn't buy and once for my present house. He is very thorough, gave me a small book with his findings and recommendations at the end. I have recommended him to several friends and they have all been very pleased. edorsch
